Local Man Wins Maple Grove Triathlon

Maple Grove’s David Phillips came away with first place in the sprint distance of Saturday’s Dare to Tri Maple Grove Triathlon.

The sprint involved a .3-mile swim, a 14-mile bike ride and a three-mile run. Phillips completed his swim in 8:12.86, finished his ride in 33:51.65 and completed the run in 19:32.41—for an overall time of 1:04:47.44.

Christine Mitchell was the fastest Maple Grove female in the sprint. Her time of 1:14:18.95 was 27th overall and first in the women’s 45-49 division.

In the international distance, Derek Haag was the fastest Maple Grove resident. His time of 2:19:57.79 was 11th overall and fifth in the elite male division for the international distance—which involves a .9-mile swim, 26-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run.

Cathy Marxen was the fastest Maple Grove female at that distance. Her time of 3:11:30.64 was 270th overall and 11th in the women’s 40-44 division.
