The Florida Panthers drafted Birkholz in the third round (67th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He also played four games in the American Hockey League for the San Antonio Rampage.

Last year, his 15 points over 47 regular season games made him fifth in scoring among first-year players on the Cyclones, an ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators.
