Maple Grove, Osseo Students Named as National Merit Semi-finalists

Osseo also had two students named as Commended Students.

Maple Grove Senior High students Malavika Suresh and Emily Leonard and Osseo Senior High’s Emma Folke have been were named National Merit Scholar semi-finalists, Osseo Area Schools announced.

The three were among the 16,000 semifinalists chosen from more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

They will compete for 8,000 scholarships worth about $35 million. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will announce the winners between April and July.

Osseo Senior High also had students Kerry J. Bloomfield and Rory J. Stiller named as Commended Students. The 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation will not advance in the competition, but their scores placed them among the top 5 percent of students.

They’ll receive a letter of commendation from their school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
