Turtles, Tadpoles and Historical Tours: Free Family Events in Three Rivers Park District

Information provided by Three Rivers Park District.  Free Family Fun Day: Wetland Birds Sunday, May 26, from 1-3 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. Learn about different types of birds that call a wetland home.  There will be mounts, books, photos and more to help you along. Walk along the river to look for herons, egrets and other wetland birds. This program is free and open to all ages. Farm Life, Pond Life and Doodlebugs: Activities for Kids in Three Rivers Park District

From preschoolers to youth, a variety of activities are taking place May 20-25, 2013 in the Twin Cities.

Information provided by Three Rivers Park District. Preschool Drop-off: Kits & Cubs: Pond Life Monday, May 20, from 1-3 p.m., at Lowry Nature Center, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Drop off your preschooler to explore nature in spring. They will discover the natural world through hands-on learning, stories, art, songs, play activities, live animals and hikes. Tree Removal, Plantings by Three Rivers Park District in Maple Grove

The trees are being removed in response to the emerald ash borer.

Since May 1, the Three Rivers Park District Forestry crews have been removing trees along a section of the Rush Creek Regional Trail along 101st Avenue between Jefferson Highway and Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove.  The trees are being removed in response to the emerald ash borer, according to the Three Rivers Park District. The removal is part of a plan by the district to remove approximately 2,000 ash trees in areas such as picnic areas, campgrounds and regional trail corridors. "The work is part of a planned effort to rejuvenate the landscape along this corridor and to remove vulnerable trees before they die and become extremely hazardous," Three Rivers Parks said in a press release. Is there proof that the Ash Trees are infected? I hate seeing trees harvested prematurely; many have also been removed from the Elm Creek dog park. Maples, as well??? Sad story for the ecological sustainability.   more ›

Birding in Three Rivers Park District

Now that spring has arrived, check out some of the birding events May 15-25, 2013 for all ages.

Information provided by Three Rivers Park District.  Spring Bird Hikes Wednesday, May 15, from 6-7:30 p.m., at Silverwood Park, St. Anthony. In spring, every week a different wave of migrating birds visits Silverwood to rest up on their way back north. Binoculars are available for loan. Walk-ins are welcome. Cost is $5 and this program is for ages 16+. Warbler Walk Saturday, May 18, from 7-9 a.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. The Mississippi River is a major flyway for migrating birds. Audubon Society volunteers will be on hand to aid in identification. Bring binoculars or borrow ours. From Gale Woods Farm to the The Landing-Minnesota River Heritage Park, there are a variety of activities for children at the beginning of May.

The following is a list of activities May 6-11, 2013, as provided by the Three Rivers Park District. Some events require preregistration.  Preschool Drop-Off: Kits & Cubs: Buds and Blossoms Monday, May 6, from 1-3 p.m., at Eastman Nature Center, in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Maple Grove. Decorate garden pots and plant seeds to grow at home. Play in the sensory table, learn what a flower needs to grow and examine the parts of a flower. Fish Lake Regional Park to Receive Improvements

Construction during the summer of 2013 will result in a temporary closure of Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove to vehicle traffic during the project.

As part of a pavement management project Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove will be undergoing a few changes –and a few disruptions - during the summer of 2013. The project includes replacing pavement on the entrance road, parking lots and paved trails in the park. The boat ramp is also scheduled be replaced. “The boat ramp at Fish Lake Regional Park has been a frequent source of complaints by park users due to its shallow depth and drop-off at the end of the ramp. As part of this project, the Park District will replace the existing boat ramp with a longer ramp that will extend into deeper water,” according to the press release.
