New Boys Head Hockey Coach Named at Maple Grove Senior High School

Maple Grove Senior High alumnus Tom Starkey will assume the role of head coach of the Crimson boys hockey program.

Tom Starkey has been named as the new Maple Grove Senior High boys head hockey coach, according an email from Osseo School District School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson. A Maple Grove Senior High alumnus, Starkey has the following experience, according to the email from Olson. Starkey will assume the leadership position the summer of 2013. Maple Grove Native Ends Winning Streak on ‘Jeopardy’

Maple Grove Senior High graduate Drew Horwood won eight straight games before it ended.

After winning eight straight games, Maple Grove native Drew Horwood’s winning streak on “Jeopardy” came to an end March 15. The Maple Grove Senior High graduate is among a handful of contestants on the quiz show that have managed to win eight or more straight games. “My goal was just to win one game and that’s no easy accomplishment,” said Horwood, “I was thrilled to win that much money but what really put me over the top was when Alex Trebek told me that only four people have won more games than I did. Maple Grove Senior High to Host Boys Head Hockey Coach Stakeholders Interest Meetings

The meetings will take place Monday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 13 in the Maple Grove Senior High auditorium.

Less than two weeks after the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey season came to an end, the school is asking for community input about the process of looking for a new head coach. The Osseo School District confirmed at the end of February, long time coach Gary Stefano would not be returning for the 2013-2014 season. Although the school district declined to comment as to the reason for the change, Stefano told KARE11 the district “sent him a letter telling him his contract would not be renewed.”  The news came shortly after the MGSH boys 2012-2013 hockey season ended amidst news of reported player suspensions. Maple Grove Senior High Head Hockey Coach Stefano Won’t Return Next Season

The news of coaching change reportedly came on the heels of the final game of the season against Centennial High School Thursday in which Maple Grove lost.

Following a season of a reported suspension of players, Gary Stefano will no longer be the head coach of the Maple Grove Senior High boys varsity hockey team. Osseo School District School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson released the following statement via email to Patch Feb. 28: The district can confirm that Mr. Stefano will not return as head hockey coach next year. Maple Grove Senior High administrators are looking forward to hearing stakeholder perspectives as the school begins the process of hiring a new head hockey coach.  No details were provided by the school district if the coaching change came as a result of resignation, noncontract renewal or other circumstances. Maple Grove Students Named to University of Kansas Fall 2012 Honor Roll

Both Maple Grove Senior High and Wayzata High School graduates made the list.

More than 4,450 undergraduate students at the University of Kansas earned honor roll distinction for the fall 2012 semester. The students, from KU's Lawrence campus and the schools of Allied Health and Nursing in Kansas City, Kan., represent 97 of 105 Kansas counties, 41 other states and 39 other countries. The honor roll comprises undergraduates who meet requirements in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and in the schools of allied health; architecture, design and planning; business; education; engineering; journalism; music; nursing; pharmacy; and social welfare. Maple Grove High School Athletes Prepare for State Tournaments

Students from Maple Grove Senior High School are preparing to compete with the best of Minnesota this weekend.

It’s a big week for students at Maple Grove Senior High School. Athletes from the schools’ dance, alpine ski and nordic ski teams will compete in state tournaments. Ladies from the Maple Grove Crimson Dance Team will head to the Target Center on Friday and Saturday for the state dance competition. According to the Minnesota State High School League, Apple Valley’s Eastview Dance Team is seeking a third consecutive title. Maple Grove Senior High School students Mackenzie Koch, Sean Heaton and Mario Calabria will participate in the alpine ski and nordic ski state tournament at Giant's Ridge on Wednesday and Thursday. Off-Ice Discussion Around Maple Grove Hockey Still Heated

The incident was addressed at a recent Osseo School District School Board meeting. The Maple Grove Senior High boys varsity hockey players were also reportedly asked for feedback about coaches.

Discussions continue in the Osseo School District and at Maple Grove Senior High following an incident involving the boys hockey team in December. Reported game suspensions took place in mid-January. Osseo School Board Chair Dean Henke addressed the situation during a school board report Feb. 5. Over the past few weeks board members have received messages from residents regarding incidents in which some members of the the Maple Grove Senior High School hockey team violated the Minnesota State High School League code of conduct. It is important for members of the community to know that the board considers it unacceptable for students to engage in any behavior that violates the state high school league rules or school board policy.
