Pink signs throughout the northwest suburbs are part of a campaign to keep students safe during prom and graduation season.
Bright pink signs with “T2T” on them have been popping up across Maple Grove and other northwest suburbs. It’s all part of an effort during prom season, which focuses on preventing underage drinking and drug use. The initiative, led by a North Memorial program called Partnership for Change, took to Maple Grove Senior High school Monday. For the past four weeks, a new T2T message has been reveled through the campaign’s social media outlets: Time 2 Think, Time 2 Teach, Talk to Teens and Teen 2 Teen. Police say they responded to a call around noon Thursday, April 5 of a report of a student with a knife. The lockdown reportedly lasted about 30 minutes and no students were injured or in danger.
The Maple Grove Police Department responded to call around 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 5 to Maple Grove Senior High on the report of a student with a knife, according to Captain Keith Terlinden. The school was locked down, he said, and it appeared no students were in danger. Terlinden indicated it remains a open, active investigation and no arrests have been made. FIRST Robotics held two metro-wide tournaments during the weekend.
Aspiring engineers from across the Twin Cities metro area, including Maple Grove Senior High, came together to compete in two regional high school FIRST Robotics tournaments from March 29-31. Both the 10,000 Lakes Regional Competition and the North Star Regional Competition were held on the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus. The robotics season begins in January, when FIRST Robotics sends out information about the task the robots must complete in the competitive meets and a kit of parts and electronics for each robot. The challenge this year is called a “Rebound Rumble.” Each team must design a robot capable of picking up and shooting a basketball. The #4 seed Maple Grove Senior High boys basketball team battled against #1 seed Osseo Senior High Tuesday for the chance to move onto the Section 5AAAA championship game. In the end, the Orioles secured the 67-59 victory over the Crimson in the section semifinal game and a chance to move one step closer to a state run. Osseo’s Bridge Tusler (#50) hit 29 points for the Orioles, followed by Ian Theisen (#45) with 15 points and Will Johnson (#30) with 11 points. High scorers for Maple Grove were Jake Wieneke (#25) with 12 points and Brycen Wojta (#15) with 10 points. After an exciting section finish and first trip to state, the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team ended their run for the Class AA state title in the quarterfinal round. Hill Murray High School won by a score 5-2 over Maple Grove Senior High Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Crimson led the game early on with a goal scored by Maple Grove’s Alex Mason at the 3:19 mark in the first period. Hill Murray answered almost a minute later with a goal by Tyler Funk to tie up the game 1-1. By the start of the third period, Hill Murray had a 5-1 lead over Maple Grove. For the first time since 2001 and the first time for Coach Ron Jacobsen, the Maple Grove Senior High boys swim and dive team finished second in the 2012 Minnesota State High School League meet. Eden Prairie was the dominant team at the Class 2A state meet Saturday night, winning with 314.50 points–108.5 more than defending champion Minnetonka and Maple Grove, who tied for second with 206 points each. The 400-Yard Free Relay was one of the highlights for the Crimson during the meet. Maple Grove was in third place behind Minnetonka by two points before the final event - the 400-Freestyle Relay. After a stunning 15-1 win over Blaine High School on Friday, the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team won the Section 5AA championship and is heading for state tournament for the first time in the school's history. In an overwhelming victory Friday night, the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team secured the Section 5AA title in a 15-1 win over Blaine High School. The win gives the Crimson their first state tournament ticket in boys hockey. Maple Grove skated out to an early lead after a penalty by Blaine put the game into a power play. Scoring goals for the Crimson in the first period was Dylan Steman, Shane Wolden, Tony Paulson, Spencer Bell (2) and Jordan Gross.
