Maple Grove Junior High Names High Honor Students

School Board Approves Minor Boundary Changes in Osseo School District

The changes, part of an administrative boundary adjustment, impact about 130 students in District 279.

Upon the recommendation of Osseo School District staff, the District 279 School Board approved an administrative boundary adjustment at the Tuesday, Jan. 24, meeting. During a presentation to the School Board, Assistant Superintendent Kim Riesgraf outlined the following reasons for the administrative boundary adjustments: Riesgraf cited Osseo School District Policy 725, which allows the district to make administrative boundary adjustments for situations where “overcrowding exists in a small number of buildings” as well as the “re-assignment of a small number of census areas." Overall, three neighborhoods (census areas) in District 279 will be impacted—about 130 of the district’s 20,500 students. The changes will be effective July 1, 2012. …

Maple Grove Student Earns Spot on USA Junior World Taekwondo Team

Zachery Budde will compete at the 2012 Junior World Taekwondo Championships in Egypt.

After years of training, Maple Grove Junior High student and Maple Grove resident Zachery Budde will be competing in the 2012 Junior World Taekwondo Championships. Budde recently earned a spot on the USA Junior World Taekwondo team, one of 20 team members to earn a spot from throughout the United States. Budde is the only Minnesota athlete on the team. The group will travel to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt in April for the 2012 Junior World Taekwondo Championship competition.  According to USA Taekwondo, Budde trains with coach Grandmaster Eui Lee, his dojang at World Taekwondo Academy in Maple Grove.  "I have never once questioned if this is the sport for me," Budde said on the USA Taekwondo website. District 279 School Board Approves Facilities Improvement Projects

Several school buildings in Maple Grove, Osseo could see improvements during the 2013 fiscal year.

As part of an ongoing facilities planning process in the Osseo School District 279, the School Board recently approved the capital and facilities plan for 2013. The facilities improvement proposal was approved on the consent agenda at the Jan. 10 District 279 School Board meeting. According to documents provided to the School Board, funding for the improvements are projected to be about a $2.7 million facilities levy,  $4.8 million from bonds and $1.6 million from land sale funds. The tax impact, Assistant Superintendent Kim Riesgraf said in an interview with Patch after the meeting, “will be about the same that it has been in previous years.” Taxpayers would see the impact on their 2013 property tax. Maple Grove Police Investigator Uses Trip to Mexico to Enhance His Skills

Detective Brad Holzerland got a chance to see how law enforcement works in Mexico City.

With ten years at the Maple Grove Police Department, Detective Brad Holzerland knows the ins and outs of the city but was eager to learn more about public safety. As a result, he decided to work his through the public safety administration graduate program at Saint Mary’s University. When a chance came up for he and his fellow classmates to go to Mexico City to see how law enforcement works in another country, he jumped at the chance. “Many years ago, in high school, I was able to take a trip to Mexico City and stay with a host family as part of our Spanish class and it was a positive experience,” Holzerland said. He was eager to go back.  This time around, Holzerland spent a week touring police facilities and talking with officers. He …

Investigation Continues Into Maple Grove Junior High Science Class Fire

Science teacher remains on paid administrative leave, student returns to school.

It’s been about a month since a science class fire at Maple Grove Junior High and the investigation into the incident continues. The flash fire, which reportedly happened during a science class methanol demonstration on Dec. 1, burned four students causing the students to be hospitalized. Three students were released the same day. Student Dane Neuberger sustained severe burns, according to media reports, and was released from the hospital the weekend after the incident occurred. Neuberger returned to school Jan. 3, the first time since the incident, according Barbara Olson, school/community relations director. Girl Scouts Unveil New Artwork at Maple Grove Junior High

The girl scouts, also students at the school, designed and created the community art piece.

Shortly before winter break, Troop 100821 Girl Scouts unveiled a new piece of artwork  they designed and created for Maple Grove Junior High. The community art piece was desgined to represent Maple Grove. McKenna Ahlgren, Leighton Holmberg, Mary Noel and Grace Park took more than 40 hours to complete the project before donating it to the school as part of their Silver Award. Their leader is Cathy Tarman, assistant troop leader Elaine Park.

Maple Grove Junior High Students Contribute to Community Through Food Drive

This holiday season, Maple Grove Junior High students are giving back to the community—one piece of food at a time. The student body at the Osseo School District 279 recently participated in a food drive, sponsored by the school’s student council. “In ISD 279, a part of our mission is for students to contribute to community.  The food drive is one way in which we can encourage and help students to understand the importance of giving back to the community,” said Principal Laurel Anderson. “Our community often reaches out to Maple Grove Junior High and this is one that we can give back.” It is the fourth year the 25-member student council organization at the junior high has led the food drive. Maple Grove Fire Blotter: Contractor Cuts Gas Line

A weekly report of incidents responded to by the Maple Grove Fire Department, including a fire at Maple Grove Junior High and leaking propane tank.

A report of a possible gas leak on the 6500 block of Ives Lane North prompted a call to the Maple Grove Fire Department on Nov. 29. According to the incident report, a contractor was replacing siding at the residence when the gas line was cut between the meter and house. The fire department also responded to a call at Maple Grove Junior High on the 7000 block of Hemlock Lane on Dec. 1 that was a result of a flash fire during a science class demonstration. A leaking propane prompted a call of an outside equipment fire on the 7600 block of Mariner Place North on Dec. 1.  This, and other incidents, appeared on the weekly report provided by the Maple Grove Fire Department for the week of Nov. 28 through Dec. 4 including six smoke/odor related …

Superintendent Addresses Maple Grove Junior High Science Class Incident

Less than a week after a science class demonstration at Maple Grove Junior High left four students burned and hospitalized, Osseo School District Superintendent Kate Maguire spoke to the community about the incident. Maguire spoke at the Dec. 6 District 279 School Board meeting during her superintendent’s report. She apologized for the Dec. 1 incident and reported on what is happening at the district level in response to the matter.
