Expansion Plans for I-494 Through Maple Grove Put in Motion

With a lack of state funding, MnDOT says they are trying to come up with creative solutions to fix problem areas like Interstate 494 through Maple Grove.

Commuters using Interstate 494 during rush hour know the interstate jams up between Plymouth and Maple Grove. The five-mile stretch of road between Highway 55 in Plymouth and East Fish Lake Road in Maple Grove only has two lanes and causes traffic to back up quickly. Now MnDOT says there is a plan in place to deal with the problem. MnDOT plans to build “dynamic shoulder lane,” which would essentially create a third lane along Interstate 494 that would be open during peak traffic times. MnDOT calls the solution a short-term fix, but Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson is concerned the additional lane won’t be temporary. “I think it should be a short-term fix but my fear is that it becomes a long term fix,” Steffenson told 12 News. “It all …

Perhaps Instead of just adding a thrid lane - we need to look at closing that exit …   more ›

Cold Temperature Complicates Snow, Ice Removal from Roads in Maple Grove, Twin Cities

Maple Grove Director of Public Works Ken Ashfeld: "Due to the conditions in which the snow fell, under heavy traffic and then plummeting temperatures, we have ice conditions whereby the actions of deicing agents had little effect during Monday."

Two days after most of the Twin Cities area, including Maple Grove, received more than 10 inches of snow, traveling the roadways remained complicated in spots. The Minnesota Department of Transportation addressed the road conditions in a Dec. 11, 2012 statement on the Minnesota Department of Transportation Facebook page:  MnDOT continues addressing the compacted snow and icy conditions on highways and interstates—particularly in southwestern/west central Minnesota and the Twin Cities Metro area. The cold temperatures are complicating our work, because salt becomes much less effective at 10 degrees or lower. Temps will warm over the next couple days, which will make the salt compounds we’ve been putting on the roads MUCH more effective. …

Mysterious RV Fire Delays Sunday Interstate 94 Traffic

The Maple Grove Fire Department responded to a recreational vehicle fire with hundreds of gallons of water to subdue the blaze.

The Maple Grove Fire Department was called to the scene of an RV fire on eastbound Interstate 94 at about 6 p.m. The firefighters responded with a pumper truck, which carry 500 gallons of water, according to an email from Fire Chief Scott Anderson on Tuesday. “The fire was so big, the 500 gallons was not enough. So our tanker truck was requested later on during the incident,” Anderson said. Firefighters put it out sometime after the tanker truck arrived at about 6:25 p.m. Even though the fire was out, the mystery as to what happened just started.  “What made this event unusual was there was no …

I arrived on the scene very shortly after the fire started. There were two other motorists stopped prior to me, including an off-duty paramedic/EMT. I stood back as they opened the side door of the RV checking for occupants. The smoke, however, was too thick and acrid to see anything. Beyond that there was nothing we could do. A short time later a police officer arrived at the scene with a fire …   more ›
