Following a season of a reported suspension of players, Gary Stefano will no longer be the head coach of the Maple Grove Senior High boys varsity hockey team. Osseo School District School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson released the following statement via email to Patch Feb. 28: The district can confirm that Mr. Stefano will not return as head hockey coach next year. Maple Grove Senior High administrators are looking forward to hearing stakeholder perspectives as the school begins the process of hiring a new head hockey coach. The Osseo Senior High School Orioles couldn’t manage to score a goal in the Section 5AA quarterfinals Saturday. Blaine High School, seeded first, scored one goal in the first period, two in the second period and a final goal in the third period, bringing the Orioles’ season to an end. But things went differently for Maple Grove Senior High School. Playing against sixth seed Irondale High School, the Crimson boys found momentum right away, scoring four goals in the first period and beating Irondale 6-0. Both hockey teams will compete in the section 5AA tournament this weekend.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, the Maple Grove Crimson and the Osseo Orioles will hit the ice to compete in the Minnesota State High School League section 5AA tournament. At 8 p.m. at the Ice Forum in Champlin, Maple Grove Senior High School boys, seeded third, will compete against number six seed Irondale. At 1 p.m. at the Coon Rapids Ice Center, eighth seed Osseo Senior High School will take on Blaine High School, the number one seed. Discussions continue in the Osseo School District and at Maple Grove Senior High following an incident involving the boys hockey team in December. Reported game suspensions took place in mid-January. Osseo School Board Chair Dean Henke addressed the situation during a school board report Feb. 5. Over the past few weeks board members have received messages from residents regarding incidents in which some members of the the Maple Grove Senior High School hockey team violated the Minnesota State High School League code of conduct. Maple Grove Senior High parents received their first communication from Principal Sara Vernig on Jan. 24 since the several players from the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team were reportedly been suspended from play for several games. School officials met with local media after school the same afternoon. “The off-campus incident that was reported to school officials this week [Jan. 17] took place in mid-December,” Osseo School District School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson wrote to Patch in an email. On their home ice at the Maple Grove Community Center, the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team won 8-0 over Osseo Senior High Thursday, Jan. 3.
