Maple Grove Senior High alumnus Tom Starkey will assume the role of head coach of the Crimson boys hockey program.
Tom Starkey has been named as the new Maple Grove Senior High boys head hockey coach, according an email from Osseo School District School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson. A Maple Grove Senior High alumnus, Starkey has the following experience, according to the email from Olson. Starkey will assume the leadership position the summer of 2013. Less than two weeks after the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey season came to an end, the school is asking for community input about the process of looking for a new head coach. The Osseo School District confirmed at the end of February, long time coach Gary Stefano would not be returning for the 2013-2014 season. Although the school district declined to comment as to the reason for the change, Stefano told KARE11 the district “sent him a letter telling him his contract would not be renewed.” The news came shortly after the MGSH boys 2012-2013 hockey season ended amidst news of reported player suspensions. The Maple Grove Senior High School boys hockey team will face Centennial High School on Wednesday.
The Osseo Senior High School Orioles couldn’t manage to score a goal in the Section 5AA quarterfinals Saturday. Blaine High School, seeded first, scored one goal in the first period, two in the second period and a final goal in the third period, bringing the Orioles’ season to an end. But things went differently for Maple Grove Senior High School. Playing against sixth seed Irondale High School, the Crimson boys found momentum right away, scoring four goals in the first period and beating Irondale 6-0. Maple Grove, seeded third, face second seed Centennial in the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the State Fairgrounds. Students from Maple Grove Senior High School are preparing to compete with the best of Minnesota this weekend.
It’s a big week for students at Maple Grove Senior High School. Athletes from the schools’ dance, alpine ski and nordic ski teams will compete in state tournaments. Ladies from the Maple Grove Crimson Dance Team will head to the Target Center on Friday and Saturday for the state dance competition. According to the Minnesota State High School League, Apple Valley’s Eastview Dance Team is seeking a third consecutive title. Maple Grove Senior High School students Mackenzie Koch, Sean Heaton and Mario Calabria will participate in the alpine ski and nordic ski state tournament at Giant's Ridge on Wednesday and Thursday. The Section 2AAA Tournament was held Saturday, Feb. 2 at Wayzata High School.
It was a back-and-forth kind of tournament between the Wayzata Trojets and the Maple Grove Crimson Dance Team last weekend. The Crimson jazz team won the Section 2AAA Tournament held on Saturday and the Crimson kick team placed second. The Wayzata Trojets took first in kick and second in jazz. Crimson kick and jazz teams will perform next at the Minnesota State High School League State Tournament on Feb. 15 at Target Center. "This team of 33 dancers has worked very hard to reach their goal of making it to state in both jazz and kick this year. School officials: “Following the recent situation involving some members of the hockey team, we know there is additional work to do.”
“I want to be clear – this behavior is unacceptable. In my 32 years of coaching, boys and girls high school sports, is by far my worst experience.” These words from Maple Grove Senior High Boys Hockey Coach Gary Stefano came at the start of a Jan. 24 meeting that school officials shared an action plan with the media for “moving forward” following an incident reportedly involving some student athletes. No additional details were disclosed Thursday about the actual nature of the incident that led to the reported student athlete suspensions – district officials continuing to cite data privacy. Updated 8:45 p.m. Jan. 18, 2012 The following statement was received from Osseo School District School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson via email: As you know, the district received a complaint about Maple Grove Senior High hockey team behavior. In order to conduct a thorough investigation, and according to district protocol, yesterday we placed Mr. Stefano on administrative leave with pay from his coaching responsibility, pending the district’s investigation.
