The following events are offered Jan. 6-12, 2013 in the Three Rivers Park District. Some activities do require preregistration. For more information on registration, visit the Three Rivers Park District website or call 763-559-6700. Information provided by Three Rivers Park District. Preschool Drop-off: Kits & Cubs: Stars & Stripes Monday, Jan. 7, from 1-3 p.m., at Eastman Nature Center in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Maple Grove. Drop off the kids to discover the wonders of space. Make a glow-in-the-dark project, sing space songs, and eat a galactic snack. Cost is $10 and reservations are required. Recycled Bird Feeders Sunday, Dec. 2, from 1:30-2:30 p.m., at Eastman Nature Center, in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Dayton. Prepare a feast table for the birds. Make bird feeders using milk cartons, pinecones, and meshing. Learn which birdseed attracts which birds. Receive seed and a suet cake to take home.Cost is $5 and reservations are required. Information provided by Three Rivers Park District. Frosty Faces – Ceramic Snowman Kit and Mug Making Get ready for winter and create a personalized clay snowman kit and mug for hot cocoa. On Sunday, Nov. 11, from 1-4 p.m., at Silverwood Park, learn basic hand-building skills and decorating techniques as you make reusable pipes, buttons, and carrot noses for your snow friend and a mug just for you. A St. John’s Lutheran School student and a St. Michael-Albertville High School student train and participate the Miracles of Mitch kids triathlon each year. Now, they’re taking on a fundraising event in Maple Grove to help the cancer cause.
Eight years ago, seven-year-old Kristina Swenson heard about the Miracles of Mitch kids triathlon from her Foss swimming instructor and decided she had to participate – just days before the event. “I was excited! I came home and told my mom I wanted to do a kids triathlon. I think I had her until I told her that it was in four days,” Kristina said, who is now a student at St. Michael-Albertville High School. “I convinced her otherwise and I loved it so much I’ve been back ever since.” Her brother Kyle, a student at St. John’s Lutheran School in Maple Grove, quickly followed suit when he was seven years old, both training year round through their involvement in local school and club sports. The 2012 Hennepin County Fair included 4-H exhibits, rides, petting zoo and more. The fair's final day is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2012.
