Less than two weeks after the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey season came to an end, the school is asking for community input about the process of looking for a new head coach. The Osseo School District confirmed at the end of February, long time coach Gary Stefano would not be returning for the 2013-2014 season. Although the school district declined to comment as to the reason for the change, Stefano told KARE11 the district “sent him a letter telling him his contract would not be renewed.” The news came shortly after the MGSH boys 2012-2013 hockey season ended amidst news of reported player suspensions. The news of coaching change reportedly came on the heels of the final game of the season against Centennial High School Thursday in which Maple Grove lost.
Following a season of a reported suspension of players, Gary Stefano will no longer be the head coach of the Maple Grove Senior High boys varsity hockey team. Osseo School District School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson released the following statement via email to Patch Feb. 28: The district can confirm that Mr. Stefano will not return as head hockey coach next year. Maple Grove Senior High administrators are looking forward to hearing stakeholder perspectives as the school begins the process of hiring a new head hockey coach. Maple Grove Senior High parents received their first communication from Principal Sara Vernig on Jan. 24 since the several players from the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team were reportedly been suspended from play for several games. The Orioles fell 5-1 against the Skippers Nov. 29.
In their first regular 2012-2013 season game, the Osseo Orioles boys varsity hockey team came up short against the Minnetonka Skippers. Osseo Senior High School lost 5-1 to Minnetonka High School in the Nov. 29 meet up at Minnetonka High School, according mnhockeyhub.com. The Orioles #16 Rudy Alexander with the assist from #22 Drew Lofgren scored the lone goal for Osseo in the third period. Scoring for Minnetonka was #9 Max Coatta and #10 Charlie Huminski in the first period. A second period goal came from #40 Tommy Brandabur followed by third period goals by #10 Charlie Huminski and #18 AJ Klein. After coming off a state tournament run last year, the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team lost one of their first game of the season Friday, Nov. 23 with a 4-1 loss against Wayzata High School. The Crimson faced the Trojans in the Wayzata Turkey Trot tournament. Sophomore Joe Norenberg scored the only goal for the Crimson. For Wayzata, each of the four goals was a varsity career first for freshman Max Zimmer, juniors Chad Olson and Chandler Linstrand and sophomore Matthew Freytag, according to the Star Tribune. After a stunning 15-1 win over Blaine High School on Friday, the Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey team won the Section 5AA championship and is heading for state tournament for the first time in the school's history.
