Hear from a teacher what parents should know about back-to-school week.
Earlier this month, Samara Postuma wrote about how to shop for school supplies—and the potential nightmare that shopping trip can be. My daughter is 1. Her school supplies are food, so I've got that supply (mostly) covered. But my sister is a teacher in the Robbinsdale School District—and parent to two almost-teenage boys. ("We had an $800 grocery bill in one month this summer," she said last week. With a straight face.) As we began talking about school supplies, I learned a few things about the first day of school from one teacher out there for you. Something to think about beyond that first-day scramble—which arrives for many of you next week. 1. Make sure your kids' lunch money accounts are filled, as much as you can. (Yes, old people…

The following was submitted by Maple Grove Psychotherapist Jenny Reimann of Reimann Counseling Clinic. I can still remember my nerves getting ramped up in August every year, just waiting, and often dreading, for the school year to start. The smell in the air changed, it was getting a bit darker earlier, and things started to feel a bit more serious. School is coming soon, and though most parents are getting eager for their kids to have more of a structure to their day, the kids are often getting a bit nervous. With summer comes little structure, later bedtimes, and a lot of fun. Transitioning back into our school routine can sometimes be a challenge for both parents and kids. If you start seeing a change in your child’s behavior as the …

It's August, otherwise known as Back-to-School readiness month, Patch wants to know how your family does the school supply shopping thing?
School supplies have been on the shelves for nearly a month already, some say certain supplies are already picked over. Now that August is here, the real surge in shopping for supplies is expected to hit and for some of us parents, it's not our most favorite time. I took mine to Target last week and am happy to report that while I was able to keep my cool another nearby mom wasn't. She gave up the battle, threw the supplies they had already chosen into a bin and left. Empty handed. I can't say I blame her. With kids in three different schools and four different class lists, it's easy to get overwhelmed and simply annoyed with the shopping process. While our eighth grader's list was super specific with certain colored notebooks and folders…
Federal mandate requires the district to increase lunch prices for the 2012-2013 school year.
Students taking hot lunch in the Osseo School District this school year will be paying a little more out of pocket for their food. The Osseo School District School Board unanimously approved increasing school lunch prices by 10 cents for the 2012-2013 school year at a June school board meeting. The reason for the increase, according to a memo provided to the School Board by District 279 Director of Food Services Tom Pellegrino, is because the “USDA has issued a mandate nationwide to raise paid lunch prices by at least 10 cents every school year until the average lunch price is high enough to be in compliance with Paid Lunch Equity (PLE).” The increase in student lunch prices results in the following prices for the 2012-2013 school year: $2…

Getting your preschooler ready for the first day soon? Kindercare Learning Centers has some tips for a smooth transition.
Editor's note: The following back to preschool tips were provided by Center Director Cori Warnke at Kindercare Learning Centers. Back to Preschool Tips: As a Center Director at KinderCare Learning Centers, I know how exciting the beginning of a new school year can be, but I also see how tough the separation process can be when mom or dad says goodbye to their little one. The anxieties a child may feel at drop-off time are completely normal….and so are the parents! It’s encouraging for parents to know that there are many positive ways to say goodbye at school that will help build a child’s confidence. Be an Early Bird. One way to ease the transition is to arrive at school 15 minutes early to give preschoolers enough time to adjust to the …
