Wayzata High School Students Honored as Minnesota Scholars of Distinction

Several students from Wayzata High School will be honored in a May 18 ceremony.

Information provided by the Minnesota Department of Education. Forty-two Minnesota high school students will be honored Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Scholars of Distinction award program in the areas of Science, STEM, Mathematics, Social Studies, Leadership and Theater Arts. To earn recognition, a student must complete required work in Minnesota’s academic standards, demonstrate mastery of complex subject matter, and apply their knowledge and skills on challenging projects, according to a press release from the Minnesota Department of Education.  Among those to be recognized Saturday include several Wayzata High School students:  Minnesota Department of Education Deputy Commissioner Jessie Montano will be on hand for the ceremony at the …

After 45 Years, A Cedar Island Elementary Teaching Career to End

Barbara Davidson Lawson: “The key to teaching is to respect each child.”

In April 1968, Barbara Davidson Lawson started her teaching career teaching first grade at Zanewood Elementary School in Brooklyn Park. “Zanewood was the newest elementary school in the district,” she said. “Potato fields bordered close to the playgrounds.” The beginning of her teaching career started in the Osseo School District – a time when the district office consisted of two rooms at Osseo Senior High and staff-driven Wastebasket Revue was just beginning. “I have seen tremendous growth, development and change in the district. Yes, things change. Yet, some things remain the same,” she said. From her career beginning at Zanewood, Lawson has since moved to Cedar Island Elementary in Maple Grove. “I have enjoyed teaching at Cedar Island …

Two School Levy Requests to be on November 2013 Election Ballot

The Osseo School District 279 School Board voted to request an operating and technology levy from voters in a special election Nov. 5.

After a narrow defeat in the 2012 election, the Osseo School District School Board has decided to ask voters again for approval of an operating and technology levy.  The Osseo School District School Board approved, by a vote of 5-1 at its May 7 meeting, to place two school funding questions on the November 2013 election ballot. The questions will ask, according to the Osseo School District website. In the upcoming months, community members will receive “much more detailed information about these request to our community members” through a “comprehensive education campaign,” District 279 Superintendent Kate Maguire told the school board. To add on to the multiple issue comment, one of the hallmarks of passing levies is to have 3 or 4 issues attached to the levy. So it's not as simple as going to vote for example "$5 million on technology", but it would be $5 million on technology, expanding the distance from school where buses would pick up the kids, keeping teacher/student ratios low by not laying off teachers, expanding the …   more ›

Four Maple Grove-Area Students Win $2,500 National Merit Scholarships

The students were selected from a pool of 15,000 finalists.

Four Maple Grove-area students are among the winners of $2,500 National Merit Scholarships released Wednesday, the organization announced. This year’s local winners are: The National Merit Scholarship Corporation selected the students from among 15,000 finalists in the 2013 National Merit Program. The winners are judged to have the best combinations of “accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.” The number of winners in each state is proportional to the number of graduating seniors in the state.
