Parents Express Concern About ISD 279 Standards Based Grading

The Osseo School District 279 School Board will have a work session Thursday, May 17, including a listening session for community feedback about Standards Based Grading.

As the school year comes close to ending, some Osseo School District parents are expressing concern about the progress of the newly implemented Standards Based Grading. The Osseo School District implemented its first year of Standards Based Grading in District 279 during the 2011-2012 school year. In the past, student grading might have included a mixture of academic and nonacademic achievement. With Standards-Based Grading, the grading focuses heavily on academic achievement only. Nonacademic issues are included on separate reporting tools. According to a recent nonscientific poll on Maple Grove Patch, 120 out of 145 respondents were “frustrated” with the first year of implementation of Standards Based Grading in the Osseo School District…

I'm wondering if we need to rethink our belief that the Minnesota Constitution really is harder to change than state laws. We're seeing constitutional amendments precisely because the proposals couldn't make it through the law-making process. Osseo Senior High Teacher Accepted Into Supreme Court Summer Institute

Bill Bauman of Maple Grove will travel to Washington DC in June to attend the Supreme Court Summer Institute.

Bill Bauman of Maple Grove and a teacher at Osseo Senior High will travel to Washington DC this June to attend the Supreme Court Summer Institute. After a competitive application process, 60 teachers were  selected to participate this year. Bauman is the only public school teacher in Minnesota to be selected for the institute. The Institute, open to teachers in the field of law-related and civic education, is co-sponsored by Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society. The Institute offers teachers the opportunity to study recent Supreme Court Cases in detail and learn teaching methodology for conveying this information to students. ISD 833 School Board Picks Jacobus as New Superintendent

With the new leadership role offered at South Washington County Schools, it is anticipated Dr. Keith Jacobus will leave his position as Osseo School District 279 Assistant Superintendent of Leadership, Teaching and Learning.

Osseo School District 279 Assistant Superintendent Dr. Keith Jacobus has been offered the role as the new District 833 superintendent.  The South Washington County School Board voted to offered the leadership role to Jacobus following a vote on Wednesday.  “We were pleased to have two very excellent candidates for the position of superintendent,” board chair Leslee Boyd said in a release from the district. “Of our decision, Dr. Jacobus clearly has the skills and leadership abilities that inspire people to want to do their best. Osseo Senior High Students Named Gates Millennium Scholars

Olufunmilayo Arogbokun and Elizabeth Johnson received the honor.

Olufunmilayo Arogbokun and Elizabeth Johnson have been named Gates Millennium Scholars, marking the second consecutive year that Osseo Senior High seniors have earned this prestigious award, according to a press release from the District 279. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program awards good-through-graduation college scholarships to 1,000 students selected from a nationwide pool of 23,000 applicants. The scholarships can be used to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of the recipients’ choice. Originally funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the scholarship program promotes academic excellence and leadership development. Arogbokun will attend Butler …
