Osseo Schools Superintendent 'Humbled' to be Parade Grand Marshal

Kate Maguire has worked in the Osseo school district since the mid-'80s and will be the 2012 Maple Grove Days Pierre Bottineau parade July 12.

When Osseo Schools Superintendent Kate Maguire found out that she had been selected to , her first response was confusion.

“I had to ask a couple questions about what exactly a grand marshal does,” she said with a laugh. “I had to learn a little bit about it, but I understand it’s an honorary role offered to folks who have made some contributions to their communities.”

Maguire likes to say that she “grew up professionally” in the . In 1985 she got her first teaching job, a few years out of college, at Brooklyn Junior High, where she later became principal before moving into the district’s administration.

Once parade organizers educated Maguire about the responsibilities of a Bottineau grand marshal—riding in a car and waving, primarily—she said she felt honored.

Maguire said she felt that her grand marshalship reflected well upon the district.

“Community members have demonstrated that they value the schools in our area and are supportive of that,” she said. “I think folks realize that healthy schools and healthy communities are interdependent.”

Maguire and her husband will be waving from the back of a car during the Pierre Bottineau parade on July 12.
