Remodel of Former Osseo Elementary School Building Moves Forward

The District 279 School Board recently awarded a remodeling construction bid and work started at the beginning of April at the former elementary school.

After five years without students, the former Osseo Elementary site could soon reopen with a new repurpose.

The former Osseo Elementary school building, located at 324 Sixth Ave. N.E. in Osseo, was closed as an elementary school in 2008 as part of Osseo School District budget reductions.

The Osseo School Board awarded a $708,300 remodel and reconstruction bid to St. Paul-based GA Construction Inc. at the March 5 meeting. The district received 15 bids for the project. The bid was approximately $210,700 less than the estimated budget for the project.

Work began in the building at the beginning of April. By the start of the 2013-2014, the ACHIEVE program will be relocated to the former Osseo Elementary building, according to Osseo Area Schools School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson.

“The primary focus is the replacement of ceilings, lights and floor coverings to meet the standards developed for other schools in the district,” Olson told Patch in an email.

  • Five classrooms will be modified to serve the needs of students in the ACHIEVE program
  • Door systems and security will be upgraded
  • Boiler room equipment replacement

The ACHIEVE program, which currently serves about 50 students in grades 7 through age 21, is located in a leased Brooklyn Park building on Boone Avenue.

The ACHIEVE program is “designed to serve secondary age students from grade 7 through 21 years of age who require special education services in a separate site due to their disability,” according to the Osseo School District website. “The students have significant emotional and behavioral challenges that require a small school setting and individualized instruction to meet academic standards and graduation requirements.”

Next year, ACHIEVE program will expand to serve students in kindergarten through sixth grade, according to Olson.
