Former Osseo Elementary Building to be Renamed

Community members can comment on the proposed new name at the ISD 279 School Board meeting July 30, 2013.

After five years without students, the former Osseo Elementary site could soon reopen with a new purpose—and a new name.

The former Osseo Elementary school building, located at 324 Sixth Ave. N.E. in Osseo, was closed as an elementary school in 2008 as part of Osseo School District budget reductions.

Work began in the building at the beginning of April. By the start of the 2013-2014, the ACHIEVE program will be relocated to the former Osseo Elementary building, according to Osseo Area Schools School/Community Relations Director Barbara Olson.

Along with the remodel and program relocation, Osseo Area Schools will be renaming the former building, according to a statement on the District 279 website which reads:

ISD 279 – Osseo Area Schools is renaming the former Osseo Elementary school site. To honor the building’s heritage in the city of Osseo, the proposed name is “Osseo Education Center.” Members of the community may comment on the proposed name at the school board meeting that will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at the Educational Service Center, 11200 – 93rd Ave. N., Maple Grove. The School Board will take formal action to approve a name change at the Tuesday, August 20, 2013 board meeting.

The ACHIEVE program is “designed to serve secondary age students from grade 7 through 21 years of age who require special education services in a separate site due to their disability,” according to the Osseo School District website. “The students have significant emotional and behavioral challenges that require a small school setting and individualized instruction to meet academic standards and graduation requirements.”
