Some topics covered are: patrol operations, criminal investigations, drug enforcement, DWI enforcement, community crime prevention, tactical operations, firearms and defensive tactics.

The application deadline is Sept. 19. Class size is limited to 20 citizens. Eligibility factors include being a Maple Grove resident or business representative, at least 18 years of age, and passing a criminal background check.

The Citizen Academy participants will come to class with a variety of backgrounds, questions, and philosophies about police officers. The Academy participants will be presented with open explanations of how the police department operates. They will learn the successes as well as the problems faced by the department and how they are handled. The Academy will also include tours of the facilities and an optional four-hour ride along with a patrol officer.

The Citizen Academy is also a two-way educational process. While citizens are learning all about what police officers do on a daily basis, officers also are hearing how citizens feel about issues and what can be done to resolve any potential problems. The department could develop a better feel for the concerns of residents and the perceptions they have of the Maple Grove Police Department.
