Goodwill Plan for Second Maple Grove Location Gets Planning Commission Recommendation

A PUD Development Stage Plan to build a 20,600 square-foot Goodwill store in Maple Grove goes to the city council.

A plan proposed by Goodwill to build a second retail store in Maple Grove moves on to the Maple Grove City Council for approval.

The city planning commission recently agreed to recommend approval of a PUD Development Stage Plan for Goodwill to constructing a 20,600 square foot retail facility on approximately 2-acres of the () site.

The proposed Goodwill store would be a standalone, retail store, according to Aug. 13 planning commission documents.

Maple Grove city staff wrote the proposed plan is “relatively simple” with the square shaped building sitting near the center of the lot, parking areas on the south and east side, drive-through for donation drop-offs on the west side and a loading area on the north side.

Oppidan Inc., on behalf of Goodwill, presented the request for the PUD Development State Plan to the Maple Grove Planning Commission at the Aug. 13 meeting.

In a memo to the commission, Oppidan wrote Goodwill would use the building for retail purposes seven days a week and employ “up to 30 employees along with 8-12 participants which are engaging in career training programs.”

Commissioners primarily asked questions about the proposed parking in the area, a concern echoed by a Grove Square Plaza representative who said the plaza tenants supported the plan, but had “concerns” about possible overflow parking. Documents provided to the planning commission by staff said there would be “an overall estimated surplus of 150 parking spaces” which indicates an “ample supply of parking onsite.”

Goodwill representatives told the commission as soon as approvals are set, they would like to possibly start construction the fall of 2012 and there were no plans to close the other location located off of County Road 30.
