Police Remind Residents About Social Host Ordinance

Maple Grove has a social host ordinance that prohibits persons under the age of 21 to possess or consume alcohol, even within a private residence.

The following information was provided by Crime Prevention Officer Todd Strege.

With summer time approaching, the Maple Grove Police Department would like to remind residents that we have a social host ordinance that prohibits persons under the age of 21 to possess or consume alcohol, even within a private residence.

This ordinance holds persons criminally responsible for hosting events or gatherings where persons under 21 years of age possess or consume alcohol regardless of whether the person hosting the event or gathering, supplied the alcohol.

A national study shows that 61 percent of underage drinking took place in someone else’s home, while 31 percent of underage drinking occurred in their own home. Sixty-five percent of underage drinkers get alcohol from adults such as their parents, guardians, family members or unrelated adults.

By sharing this information, we hope to raise the level of awareness of our ordinance in order to help prevent underage drinking. We believe by working together we can create a community that is safer and healthier for our youth.

They'll come into my home to recruit my son to go to war to defend our country at the age of 18 and at the same time wag their finger at me not to give him a beer before 21. Makes perfect sense.

I am thrilled to see this reminder from MGPD and know that they take underage drinking and those who provide a location for underage drinking seriously. As my children near the teen years, I want to know that other adults are not allowed to provide a location for them to drink. This is about keeping our kids safe.
