Plymouth Fire Destroys Vehicle, Threatens Nearby Homes

The fire threatened town homes and single-family homes in Plymouth. Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles into Maple Grove and on Highway 169.

The Plymouth Fire Department was called to the 11200 block of 57th Avenue North in Plymouth around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The department responded to a report of a vehicle and swamp fire that was “well involved,” according to Plymouth Fire Chief Richard Kline.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured, he said.

The wind drove the fire in two different directions and “threatened town homes and single family homes,” Kline said.

“They were doing some type of work in the swamp with a machine...when it caught fire and the combustible brush next to it caught fire. The wind just took it,” he said.

Resident Chris Wold, who captured photos of the blaze, happened to be in his hot tub outside when he saw black smoke billowing into the air and ran into him townhome to call 911.

Wold said he knew brush was being cleared behind his home and he didn’t initially know where the driver of the vehicle was. He said he was concerned about the driver and the direction the wind was blowing the fire.

According to Kline, no homes were damaged during the fire.

“We got the fire knocked down before it got to any homes,” he said.

All three of Plymouth’s fire stations were called to the scene. A portion of Zachary Lane off of Bass Lake Road was blocked off. Kline said they hoped to have the area cleared by 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
