Maple Grove Police: Dog and Cat Licensing Requirement

Effective January 1, 2013, dog and cat owners will no longer be required to purchase a city animal license, according to a press release.

Editor's note: The following was provided by the Maple Grove Police Department.

Effective January 1, 2013, dog and cat owners will no longer be required to purchase a city animal license.

The changes to our code are consistent with the ordinances in many metropolitan area communities. Our research showed that licensing was not beneficial to the return of animals.  Most animals found running at large were unlicensed. More often, animals were returned because they had an identification tag, rabies tag, or an implanted microchip.

The new requirement for domestic animals (dogs, cats and ferrets) is as follows:

Sec 6-42 Identification Required

(a) Dog and cat owners are no longer required to obtain an animal license for their pet.

(b) All dogs, cats, and ferrets are required to have some identification on them. Identification allowed under this subdivision includes microchips, veterinarian issued rabies tags, or any tags or collars with contact information and phone number(s) inscribed on it.

In addition, all dogs, cats and ferrets must have a current rabies vaccination administered by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine per city code Sec. 6-41 (b).

Any questions regarding this new requirement can be referred to CSO Program Coordinator, Ann M. Sargent asargent@maplegrovemn.gov.
