Why do we have tryouts?

In a perfect world, everyone could be a part of any team they wanted.  In this world, I would be playing center forward for Everton F.C. and getting phone calls from Roy Hodgson inviting me to play on the England national soccer team. Unfortunately, in this world I would embarrass myself, my teams and the game itself.  If everyone could be on every team, then how would one know what their skills are?

So let's say every player who wanted it was accepted onto the team they desired. The roster would be massive and some, if not most of the players would not make much improvement. The players who would have made the tryouts anyways would still be picked for most games while the others stayed behind. That would hurt a player’s self-esteem just as much as not being on the roster in the first place.

These tryouts exist because some things are just not a fit for some people, their skills are elsewhere.  It's not about being mean; it's just a method that works.

Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) regulates what roster sizes, and with the promotion and relegation system for U11+ team’s helps distinguish where soccer associations should place their teams for the season.  Each soccer club
adheres to these regulations to provide uniformity and an even playing field.

For most soccer associations their tryouts will be hosted at the end of July or early August.
