Fall Arts Activities at the Maple Grove Arts Center

There is so much going this fall at the arts center—check out our upcoming events.  The arts center is always looking for volunteers, students, and artists. We have many free event, classes and advanced classes for everyone.  

The arts center also hosts The Grove Student Artists, our youth arts council.  The students meet on Friday evenings for a free informal open studio.   The youth council also volunteers at the arts center and is involved in outreach programs. Later on this fall and winter Scott Hansen will be teaching a Comedy writing class for teens.  
Upcoming events:
Monster Show & Zombie Pub Krawl 
October 26, opening reception 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.  Free event Costume contest, palm reading and other ghoulish games and refreshments. 
Zombie Pub Krawl starts at 3:00 p.m. The cost for Pub Krawl is $20 and receive a t-shirt.  Prizes will be awarded for the best Zombies. I will update this blog with more information on participating pubs on Main Street and the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes. 

Maple Grove gears up for Geocache adventure 
September 21 - October 6
Maple Grove Arts Center will be a geo destination. According to Maple Grove Magazine: "To get involved, pick up your passport at Whirlyball, the Maple Grove Arts Center or The Daily Dose, or download one from the event website,maplegrovemag.com, where participants can register, download and discover coordinates beginning the morning ofSeptember 21. The event will also be posted on geocache.com; [prizes for those who discover every cache, as well as “first finds” on the hardest to find caches, include gift certificates to local businesses. If you’re in that aforementioned “newbie” category, you’re in luck. There’s still a geocaching workshop before the adventure begins: REI will hold a special kick-off day class September 21at an area park; register for a small fee at REI.com."

Join us for this fun-filled, information-loaded, walk-away-wanting-to-paint demo.
Throughout this two-hour presentation, you will hear tons of information about a variety of Golden acrylics and the inherent possibilities of acrylic materials. Extensive information about acrylic paints, gels and mediums is presented, including the amazing paint formula, OPEN acrylics. OPEN is designed to stay wet longer than other acrylics, allowing for more control over drying time. Learn about Digital Mixed Media grounds, materials that push the versatility of acrylics even further by mixing up printmaking, photography, and painting. And, see and try the new High Flow acrylics and how to use them with a brush, in a refillable marker or with a pen. Feel how paints and gels mix together, and see several examples of materials in a variety of applications. Learn how to extend your paint to save yourself money and how to mix gels with paints to create gorgeous textures and surfaces on which to paint. Open to all levels of creative experience. In the Company of Kids (ongoing theater classes)
Join the Fun! Sing, dance and learn improv.  Classes are great for building self esteem and confidence.

Fanciful Felted Hat

Saturday, September 21  9-4:30  $60, plus $35 materials fee  Minimum 4 students, maximum 8
Design a stylish hat ideal for the colder months ahead. Choose any look, from whimsical high crown with lots of scrunch to a classic cloche or beret. No knitting required, create your hat using colorful wool roving and traditional wet felting techniques. A variety of surface embellishments add to the fun! Previous wet felting experience/laying out fibers helpful. $35 materials fee includes all fibers and supplies. Bring from home:  2-3 hand towels, 1 old bath towel, Sharp scissors, Plastic bag to carry home wet items, Optional: apron (waterproof or cloth), snack or bag lunch.

Oil Painting for Every Level

Wednesdays, September 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30.   1:30 - 4:00 p.m.  $125, A materials List will be provided prior to the start of class by the instructor.  Beginner or experienced, this class will cover tips and techniques of painting realistically, chiaroscuro, alla prima painting, learning color values and incorporating techniques used by the masters.  

How to Start Writing
Instructors: Maple Grove Night Writers
Four experienced professional writers from the Maple Grove Night Writers critique group will give presentations on a variety of topics that face new writers.  The clinic is geared to those who want to write fiction, nonfiction, memoir or any style of creative writing and need help to get started.
