Mississippi River Fest and Heritage Day

Celebrate the Mississippi River and have fun along its banks.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, from 1-5 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis, you can participate in minnow races, create a natural boat to launch in the current, design a fish print T-shirt (bring your own shirt), and meet animals that live along the river.

Borrow a GPS unit to use on the River Challenge course. Step back in time and learn how to make your own rope, discover how Shingle Creek got its name, press apples into cider, and make popcorn over the open fire. Horse-drawn wagon rides through the prairie will be available from 1-4 p.m. Fishing poles and gear will be available for children to use free during the event to try a bit of fishing. Visit the DNR FIN tank full of river fish. At 2 p.m., clap and sing along with the Okee Dokee Brothers. Entertainment by Jacques the Voyageur at 3 p.m.
