Nadia Cakes Cupcake Shop, Custom Cake Studio Opens: No. 1, 2 Post of 2012

Maple Grove Patch covered a lot of different stories, topics and events throughout 2012, but there were a few that stood out as the most read by Patch users.

Coming in as the top first and second most read posts for 2012 was the announcement of and the opening of nationally known Nadia Cakes in Maple Grove.

Business since the July 2012 opening as been “totally better than expected,” according to Nadia Cakes founder and owner Abby Jimenez.

“Right now, the shop does four to five times what our California store does – like ever - in the history of that store. After ‘Cupcakes Wars’ aired, sales had spiked and that was about half of what we do here,” Jimenez said.

Originally about 18 people were hired for the Maple Grove store, which has since increased to 30 employees.

“We’ve stayed busy, especially on the weekends and after 3 p.m. The sales we projected for this store – we haven’t even come close to the numbers we expected. It is so much higher than we expected – which is a good thing,” Jimenez told Patch. “It has been very well received – we’re definitely in the right market.”

In addition to operating the business, Nadia Cakes has “done a lot of charity work in the Minnesota area” since opening, according to Jimenez who recently spoke at a fundraiser for the Children's Hospital Association.  “We’ve been really active in the community.”

What to expect in 2013

For one day only, on Jan. 1, the Maple Grove store will have all four cupcake flavors featured on “Cupcake Wars”: Bacon and French Toast, Chocolate Rose, Triple Berry Cheesecake Cupcake, Chocolate Stout.

Valentine’s Day is the busiest day for Nadia Cakes, according to Jimenez. The store will have heart shaped cake push pops, Valentine’s Days themed cakes and themed flavors. Preparation has begun for Valentine’s Day as well as the stores second busiest day, Mother’s Day, and the upcoming wedding season.

“I think we’re going to be introducing summer pies this year, which is exclusive to this store,” said Jimenez.  “For the Fourth of July, you’ll probably be seeing a lot of crème pies and fruit pies. We like to pick local at the farmer’s markets – making it all from stretch. For the summer, we’ll have ice cream cupcakes.”
