Maple Grove Arts Center Receives Grant for a Citywide Art Installation

The grant will be used for a citywide public art installation called "Interactive Light: Seeing Maple Grove Thru Windows."

The Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council has approved a grant in the amount of $15,000 to the Maple Grove Arts Center April 23.

The grant will be used for a citywide public art installation called “Interactive Light: Seeing Maple Grove Thru Windows” at the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, Fountains at Arbor Lakes, Hennepin County Library-Maple Grove, Arbor Lakes Senior Living, Maple Grove Government Center and the Maple Grove Arts Center.

This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008.

The project will span seven weeks beginning June 11 thru August 6. The concept and initial installation will begin at the Maple Grove Library, and is created by former Minnesotan, now Los Angeles-based artist, Cheryl Walker, cherylwalkerart.com/gallery. Local artist and Maple Grove Arts Center Education Director, Christina Hankins, will direct Grove Student Artists and volunteers at all other installation sites. Walker shares her techniques as an artist and specifically the inspiration for and “how to” of creating transparent vinyl cut outs in abstract shapes designed to temporarily adhere to a window surface, allowing light to illuminate the vinyl colors of overlapping pieces and creating free form designs.

The Maple Grove Arts Center is seeking volunteers from the community to participate in this art project. No experience necessary.
