Nature Hike with Santa, Gingerbread Houses: Holiday Events at Three Rivers Parks

From the Candy Cane Hunt to making nature crafts, a variety of holiday activities are happening in Three Rivers Parks Dec. 9-15, 2012.

The following was provided by Three Rivers Park District.

Make a Gingerbread House

Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10:30-noon, or 12:30-2 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Brooklyn Center. Create a gingerbread house and landscape its yard using crackers, cookies, icing, and a variety of colorful candies. Refreshments and all materials are provided.

Cost is $8 and reservations are required.  Call 763-559-6700 to make a reservation and reference activity number #116901-19 for the morning session, or #116901-20 for the afternoon session. This program is for ages 4+.

Santa’s elves have lost the magic reindeer food! Help Santa look for it as you walk along the nature trail. Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m.-noon, or 1-3 p.m. or 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 at Eastman Nature Center, in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Dayton, you will decorate your own letter to Santa or draw a picture for Santa and Mrs. Claus. Design a holiday ornament for your family and create an edible ornament for the squirrels. Each “helper” will have individual time with Santa and take home some magic reindeer food. Bring a camera.

Free Family Funday: Candy Cane Walk

Sunday, Dec. 9, from 1-3 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Brooklyn Center. Stroll along the candy cane trail full of nature trivia and end with a sweet treat. This program is free and open to all ages.

Natural Crafts Extravaganza at Eastman Nature Center

Get ready to deck the halls! On Friday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 15, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at Eastman Nature Center, in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Dayton, you can unleash your creativity as you select natural materials to make unique holiday ornaments to keep or give as gifts. Learn to use the sparkle of ice to add magic to your home’s exterior: colorful ice-cube garlands, frozen green arrangements, ice-block luminaries, and hanging ice-plates or ice-globes. Make your own wrapping paper or some notecards. Try your hand at origami and find yourself holding the paper image of animals and other natural things. Leave with finished crafts and enough ideas and printed instructions to keep busy the rest of the winter season.

Candy Cane Hunt at Silverwood Park

Santa’s elves have hidden candy canes around Silverwood Park, in St. Anthony. Join us on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 1-4 p.m., and search for the hidden candy canes. Find three and get a prize. Look for canes with golden ribbons for larger prizes. Hunts for children ages 0-4 will begin at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Hunts for children ages 5-10 will begin at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride, art projects, warm treats, crafts, winter games, musical performances and photos with Santa.

Pre-register for this event and save. Cost is $9 per child the day of the event, but only $7 per child if you pre-register. Adult admission is $2. To pre-register call 763-559-6700 and reference activity number #127807-00. This program is for ages 0-10.

Santa in the Holiday Forest

Do reindeer fly? Learn the secrets of caribou from an elf and search for creatures in the enchanted forest. On Saturday, Dec. 15, from 1-3 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Brooklyn Center, each child will have his or her own special time to visit with Santa and receive a special treat. There will be plenty of time to take holiday family photos with Santa, so bring a camera. Adults will make a special holiday votive while children work on their own holiday craft. Hot chocolate and cookies will be included and all activities are ongoing.
