The Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council has approved a grant in the amount of $15,000 to the Maple Grove Arts Center April 23. The grant will be used for a citywide public art installation called “Interactive Light: Seeing Maple Grove Thru Windows” at the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, Fountains at Arbor Lakes, Hennepin County Library-Maple Grove, Arbor Lakes Senior Living, Maple Grove Government Center and the Maple Grove Arts Center. This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008. A Maple Grove man is the artist behind many Midwestern sports murals and fine-art drawings of athletes, Maple Grove Magazine reports. Karl Jaeger's design sense, flair with a pencil and technical expertise have combined to make him the go-to-guy for mural display projects at sports facilities, the magazine said. Jaeger's work will be familiar to many sports fans in Minnesota, according to Maple Grove Magazine: Jaeger has been creating both small-scale, colored-pencil drawings and large-scale, computer graphic murals of athletes and sports teams nationwide for 16 years. The Chicago fine artist and Hollywood Screenwriter, Producer and Director, Leo Benvenuti, who's penned some family films like Santa Clause and Space Jam, is going to hold his debut Minnesota art exhibit at the Maple Grove Arts Center March 7-April 6 in a show called "Open Hand." Benvenuti will follow the exhibition with an Screenwriting Seminar 1-4 p.m. April 6 with additional insight on how write jokes for the screen and stage by stand-up comedian and writer Scott Hansen). The two will also perform together that same evening at a place yet to be determined (watch www.comedygallery.com for the location).
More then 200 pieces are on display at the Maple Grove Government Center through March 31.
Students throughout the Osseo School District contributed art for the annual District 279 Student Art Show hosted by the Maple Grove Arts Council. The art show, featuring two- and three-dimensional works of art, continues throughout March 2013 at the Maple Grove Government Center. Viewing hours 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The scholarship will go to Osseo Area Schools graduates and is in memory of Maple Grove resident Jacob Beneke who was killed in a workplace shooting last year.
When Maple Grove resident Jacob Beneke was killed in the Accent Signage workplace shooting last year, Maple Grove Arts Center Executive Director Lorrie Link knew that she didn’t want his memory to die. Beneke, a former member of the arts center board and business art program, was enthusiastic about art, Link said. And while the Maple Grove Arts Center already held a benefit for Beneke family members, Link wanted to do more. At the end of March, a unique scholarship opportunity will be available to newly graduated Osseo Area Schools students.
