According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner press release, the Harland Dietrich, 31, of Maple Grove and Mary Ann Haram, 87, of Maple Grove were identified as the drowning victims in the Feb. 2 Lake Minnetonka incident.

Dietrich was reportedly bringing his grandmother to an area where he had first tried ice fishing, the Star Tribune reported, stating both individuals were "unconscious and not breathing" when pulled from the vehicle. 

Original Story 11:07 a.m. Feb. 3, 2013 - A man and a woman from Maple Grove have both died after their vehicle became submerged in Lake Minnetonka Saturday, Feb. 2, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office provided the following details of the incident.

On Feb. 2, at approximately 2:25 p.m., the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office 911 Emergency Communications Facility received a 911 call from the man who stated that his car was in Lake Minnetonka and it was sinking.

Wayzata Fire Department, Wayzata Police, Minnetonka Fire, Minnetonka Fire, HCMC Ambulance, North Memorial Air Care, and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office responded. The incident took place under the Gray’s Bay Bridge in a channel of the lake.

The Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered the man from the submerged car and he was flown by helicopter to HCMC.  A short time later, the elderly woman was recovered and transported by ambulance to HCMC.

The man in his 30’s and an elderly woman died on Feb. 2 at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), the Sheriff’s Office said.  Identification of the victims is pending release from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

There have been 14 incidents in which a vehicle or snowmobile has broken through the ice on Lake Minnetonka in 2013.
