Editor's note: Last week, Jason Walker with Patch explored the food at Angeno's Pizza and Pasta. This week, Jason chats with one of the Angeno's Pizza and Pasta owners Jeff Deelstra about his restaurant background and the establishment.
Maple Grove Patch: How did you get into the restaurant business?
Jeff Deelstra: I worked for Angeno’s for a number of years before I got out of college. I got out of college, and basically bought into the place. I’ve been here since 1982, I’ve been a partner since, well, 20 years now.
Maple Grove Patch: Is there a signature item that people shouldn’t miss?
Jeff Deelstra: Our House Special is very popular. Sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, green pepper, onion, black olives, and plenty of cheese. We don’t skimp on anything. All fresh-made. We make the crust ourselves from scratch. Everything is from scratch. Spaghetti is very popular, chicken fettucini is very popular. Our lunch buffet is quite a hit, a variety of pasta, salad bar, chicken wings, a variety of pizza, that’s every day Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Maple Grove Patch: Do you have beer and wine, and are there any standouts there that you’d recommend with your pizzas?
Jeff Deelstra: Maybe a Chianti. Chianti is very popular. Pinot Grigio is very popular. And then we always have Sam Adams seasonal beers along with a few basic ones.
Maple Grove Patch: Why do people like coming to Angeno’s?
Jeff Deelstra: Friendly atmosphere, family atmosphere, and everything is fresh. It’s kind of a stake in Maple Grove, a home stake in Maple Grove.
Maple Grove Patch: So what does Angeno’s mean to Maple Grove?
Jeff Deelstra: We are very big in the community. We help out as much as we can with all the local organizations. We do a number of end-of-season sports teams’ banquets: soccer parties, football parties, baseball parties. We donate a lot to the senior high cheerleading events and football events and stuff like that. We try to help out in every way we can with the community.
Maple Grove Patch: Any future plans?
Jeff Deelstra: We are looking at doing a new menu, probably in three months or so. Expanded slightly. We pretty much stick with our staple stuff that we have. We know what works. We’ve tried desserts in the past and they don’t work. People come and and ask, ‘Why don’t you have any desserts?’ Well, we tried them, and the employees just end up eating them. The customers don’t buy them, so why have them? Some of the customers come in and say, 'Oh, you should try cheesecake, try this, try that,’ but they just don’t sell.
Maple Grove Patch: Well, that’s the beauty of being around a long time, right? You learn what works and what doesn’t.
Jeff Deelstra: Yes, absolutely.
