Maple Grove Resident Describes Scene at 2013 Boston Marathon

Boston Herald: "I was just finished and collecting my medal when it went off," Mike McMahan of Maple Grove said.

The 2013 Boston Marathon that has been rocked by two explosions near its finish line, about four hours into the race.

Six Maple Grove residents were among those running in the 2013 Boston Marathon Monday when two explosions occurred near its finish line, about four hours into the race. 

Among the Maple Grove residents running was Mike McMahan. He described the following, according to the Morning Sentinel.com

"It was before the arch of the finish," he said. "The first was a plume of smoke, like gray-white. Then problem 10 seconds later came the second one. I saw flames coming from the second one."

McMahan also stated, according to the Boston Herald.

“I was just finished and collecting my medal when it went off,” said runner Mike McMahan of Maple Grove, Minn. “Then the next one went off 10 seconds later. I saw flames on that one. I didn’t see flames on the first one. My wife was at the 25 and a half mark when she was stopped. She had to borrow a cellphone to text me she was alright. This is my first Boston and my 22nd marathon. This was an investment not a cheap adventure. I will remember this, but not for the reasons I want. I will remember this.”

In addition to McMahan, the following Maple Grove residents were at the race, according to the Boston Marathon results page. It appears the runners finished the race, but their status is not known. Jay D. Hempe, Robert Peterson, Paul Marzynski, Kristy M. Stone, Mike E. McMahan and Christopher J. Phelen.
