Business Spotlight: iDoctor of Maple Grove

The Maple Grove location opened Feb. 1, 2013 off of County Road 30. The owners repair iPhones, iPads, and iPods.

In 2010, Garry Schumacher broke his iPhone.

After looking around for options to get it fixed, his wife challenged him to repair the phone himself.

As a result, iDoctor was born.

Maple Grove Patch: What services and/or products does your business provide?

Garry Schumacher: We repair iPhones, iPads, and iPods – repairs such as broken screen replacement, battery replacement, liquid damage, and other repairs that might be keeping a device down. Most repairs are made within an hour. We offer repair for other smartphones as well.  We are growing a good selection of smartphone cases and accessories and cases for tablets.

Patch: What made you want to open a store in Maple Grove?

Schumacher:  The location and community. Both Tyler and I grew up in the northwest metro and have family in the Maple Grove area. We see a need for affordable repair in this growing community where nearly everyone has an iPhone, iPod, or iPad (let’s not forget Macbook screens and computers, too!). The service we provide saves the community money – and we have seen many customers at the Eden Prairie store from Maple Grove – so we know that the good community of Maple Grove wants to save money too.

Patch: When did you open in Eden Prairie? What drew you to the Eden Prairie community?

Schumacher: The store in Eden Prairie Center opened in February of 2011. Prior to that, repairs were made on a service call type basis. The Eden Prairie Center was an obvious choice to move to since that is my hometown. The mall is clean, safe, and fun to be in. Access to the store is easy. There were so many positive reasons for the store and for the customers that the location spoke for itself.

Patch: What is the price range for your services?

Schumacher:  The typical price range for repair service is $25-$230. Some of the newer devices might be more expensive due to part cost. On average, most repairs are right around $99. We encourage customers to contact us for an estimate.

Patch:  How are you different from other businesses that provide similar services?

Schumacher:  We see a lot of our competitors work coming back to us. One thing that stands out is the part quality many of them use. We could cut corners and reduce our prices by another $15-20, but usually the satisfaction with the repair will be pretty low.

Also, we stock a full line of repair parts for our core business – iPhones, iPads, and iPods. This allows us to get most repairs done in as little as an hour. Additionally, if other parts are needed, we have them. We typically do not need to wait several days for back up parts to arrive if something were to happen.

We will have loaner phones available for customers that need a replacement immediately and cannot wait for a diagnosis or specialized service. This will give more people the opportunity for repair instead of the need to race and get a new phone. We have a good mix of iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S that will be available for use.

Patch: Any additional comments or information to share with readers?

Schumacher:  If you are uncertain that your phone (or device) is repairable, or not, just check with us and we can give you an assessment over the phone or email. We have done a number of repairs that range from routine to weird. If there is something that you would like to see – please provide us with feedback. We are a growing company and depend upon constructive comments to get better each and every day.
